Police Interviews: ALS Linguist could only interpret with a dictionary
We hear a lot of stories about all sorts of people ALS sends to act as interpreters in courts because hearings are public.
However, not a lot transpires about interviews at the police stations... unless we got indirect info.
A young Romanian living in Manchester was arrested and interviewed in the East Midlands and he was so impressed with the professionalism of his interpreter at the police station that he praised them for being able to interpret without using a dictionary!!! When asked what he meant by this, he told them he had been interviewed on a previous occasion in Manchester and the interpreter the police used could only conduct the interview with the aid of a dictionary... Probably Greater Manchester Police which have a contract with Applied Language Solutions are now well-accustomed to the lower standards prevailing in their area.
