Stereo interpreters
SIR – Your report on the costs of providing interpreters (September 1) reminds me of the time I was chairing a domestic violence case in Newbury magistrates’ court between a married couple from Slough.
Both parties were provided with Urdu interpreters (paid for by the Ministry of Justice), whom we duly had to swear in.
When I attempted to dismiss one, on the grounds that I saw no reason why one could not interpret for both sides as they had sworn to be impartial and independent, I was told that was not acceptable.
